Cancer Research UK is the worlds leading charity dedicated to research of the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer.

More people are surviving cancer than ever before. Here are just a few examples of the enormous difference that cancer research has made to the lives of many people:

  • 7 out of 10 children with cancer can now be cured.
  • The death rate for breast cancer has fallen by 21% in the past decade.
  • 95% of men with testicular cancer are now successfully treated.

 

British Heart Foundation – charity number 225971

 

The British Heart Foundation aims to eradicate premature deaths from heart disease.  As the nation’s heart charity they focus on three vital things:

1) Investing in pioneering research, concerning every aspect of the disease from causes to safer drugs.

2) Supporting and caring for heart patients by funding BHF nurses and providing defibrillators, emergency services and first aiders.

3) Educating people to reduce their own risk of premature heart disease with vital information in the form of videos, publications, public information campaigns, media and advertising.

 

Children’s Foundation – charity number 100013

 

The Children’s Foundation raises essential funds for medical and lifestyle research to combat childhood diseases and conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism. It supports NHS service delivery and a number of innovative, community-based projects, designed to improve and protect the health and well-being of children and young people. Through our partnership programmes, we strive to address key child health issues for this region: smoking, exercise & obesity, disability, mental health and child safety, to help children in North East England but ultimately children everywhere.

 

Mercy Ships – charity number 1053055

 

Mercy Ships is a compassionate response to those in need, with volunteers working on both hospital ships and land-base programmes all over the world.  Volunteers bring their wide-ranging skills to promote good health and well-being by providing world-class medical assistance including urgent surgical assistance, and long-term sustainable development such as agricultural training and construction.  Mercy Ships are active in some of the world's poorest places including areas of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Jamaica and Ghana, offering help where many have lost hope.

 

 

Student Community Action in Newcastle (SCAN) - 501301

 

SCAN (Student Community Action Newcastle) is a registered charity that works with student volunteers at Newcastle University. SCANS mission statement is to match the needs of the community with the skills and enthusiasm of student volunteers. From IT to animals, from the NHS to youth groups SCAN helps students to find volunteering opportunities throughout Newcastle and the north east.
